The next winter, what to do with mice invade buildings?

I live in the country, well, actually, on the outskirts of the city, within the city limits and surrounded by fields. Each fall the mice try to get in – in the home, garage, shed, etc. They are looking for a warm place to spend the winter. I no longer tape and steel wool thing, looking for all possible cracks and places they could never get enough. Every year I bait just off the mouse over time, because that is the only way to get rid of them. This year there seems to be taking the bait the mouse, but are back. How to get rid of them? I know that getting a cat would help, but I have 3 dogs (mousers none) can not really add to the collection of animals wild animals at this time. Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem for years also, this is how I solved my problem ….. me I put in my hands and knees and examined all the cracks and crevices around the house and then did the same in the garage (attached to the house). Fill all means possible entry with mortar or foam, to examine the garage I found a hole was drilled from the basement to the garage during construction, and the hole was not used for anything. It was about 3 / 4 ", and after I filled it out, never saw a mouse. So they were getting around or under the molding of rubber door the garage and the basement through the hole. The only point I am trying to do is, if you really look hard, you'll find the hole, too.
