How To Build A Shed Roof

You have made the decision to build a backyard storage shed and you want to make sure that the shed and roof are structurely sound. You have to determine whether your roof will be subjected to extreme weight loads, such as in areas where you get a lot of snowfall. The last thing you want to happen after you build a shed roof, is the roof caving in because it can’t handle the weight load of the snow.

If you do happen to live in an area where you get heavy snow, it is a good idea to make sure the pitch of your roof is as steep as possible, this allows the snow to slide off and not build up on the roof.

When you are researching possible shed plans, one of the things you should look at before purchasing the shed blueprints is the roof design for the shed. You want to make sure it meets and conforms to your local building codes. If it does, then it is probably a good set of plans for you to purchase.

One of the things you can do when you build a shed roof is take your plans to your local lumber yard and have them fabricate your roof trusses for you. They may charge a nominal fee on top of the material, but it is definitely worth it.

Your roof trusses have arrived and you are ready to start construction on the roof. Take your carpenter pencil and make a mark on the top frame plate of the walls every 24″ on center. Once you have made all your marks, then you can place your first roof truss on the first mark and nail it into place, do the same for all the remaining trusses.

The next step is the decking. The decking actually ties all the trusses together and helps support the roof loads. Most roof designs will call for 5/8″ decking, double check your shed plans to see if this is the correct size for your roof design. You don’t want to use anything smaller that what is stated on your design. Install your decking, cover it with asphalt roofing paper (overlap edges) and then you are ready to install the shingles.

When selecting your shingles it is a good idea to go with at least a 20 year shingle. And if at all possible, use the same color shingle as you have on your house, it will be much more appealing if they match. If you are a member of a homeowners association, it may be also be an association requirement.

Word of advise: For safety reasons, it is a good idea to have someone working with you on the trusses and decking for your shed roof. It is also not recommended to install your decking on a very windy day, specially if you are not an experienced roofer. The wind can catch the large surface of the boards and could result in getting yourself hurt or even knocking you off the roof.

Need additional storage space?  Why not build your own Backyard Storage Shed.  With a good set of plans you will get detailed instructions on how to build a shed roof.
