Chess past the Isle of Lewis

This article introduces the reader interested as a way to shed light on an aspect of chess history that the reader not well understood. The Isle of Lewis chess form at least an interesting border between Arab and European seasons in the interpretation of chess piece and design. Before the 11th century the predominant influence on chess in Europe was of Islam. Muslim craftsmen, following the dictates of their religion, were reluctant to paint, sculpt, draw, or chisel something like the human figure. But Europeans were not so limited, and the Isle of Lewis chessmen were a consequence of artistic freedom.

The Isle of Lewis chessmen were discovered in the New Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland in 1831. There are 93 pieces in total, and were put on public display 11 April 1831 by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. It is believed that probably originated from a craftsman `s shop in Trondheim, Norway, dating from a period between 1150-1200 AD. One can easily see the Isle of Lewis chess, that European influence had finally arrived on the board of medieval Europe. Far designs Muslim abstract, Isle of Lewis chessmen were clearly, even aggressive, in imitation of the human form. The pieces are easily recognizable as the King and Queen (both carved into the seat position), the bishop with miter headdress, a knight on his horse complete with helmet and shield, and nose guard. The tower was represented by an guard (a prison guard), and is usually represented as a berserker, a Norse warrior who probably went into battle after eating hallucinogenic mushrooms. Pawns like obelisks were carved pillar, and the original Isle of Lewis chess were made from walrus tusks and whale teeth.

Unlike Today `s Plans Staunton, Isle of Lewis chess have a surplus of personality and craft. The first thing you notice about them is the low height of the body compared to the head. The queen has her left hand to the face like, "Oh, what next?" The guardian or berserker (ie, tower) shows wide-eyed, and fiercely biting his shield. The bishop is easily recognized miter headdress and a staff in his right hand. Both gentlemen have Berserkers and clever design mesh throughout your body. The Isle of Lewis chess would be a very good gift or for display or play.

Today, the original 93 pieces from the Isle of Lewis chessmen were featured in two regions. Eleven pieces are in Edinburgh's National Museum of Scotland, and the other 82 pieces are in the British Museum. Interestingly, if one wants to play a game of chess with the pieces on a board 32-3/4 "square would be necessary. In the history of chess Island Lewis Chess had its time, but not past. Many chess online sites, including this article is tied to recognize its historic value and sell them. The Island Lewis Chess are dead, long live the Isle of Lewis chess!
