There is a very bright star in the sky that has only been there a couple of months. What is it?
I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I do not think a planet, because the planets only appear for a few days at a time, and usually low (near the horizon) in the sky. Is this a galaxy now closer than ever to us? Please help me shed some light on this. Thanks!
It is Jupiter. Planets outside the Earth's orbit may be visible months or more. No days. Jupiter is visible during most of the year, depending on where you look, because it takes Jupiter almost 12 years to orbit the sun.
