With the recent spate of heavy rains we've had has shown many roofs in Southern California in need of repair or replacement. You may have experienced water leaks yourself because homelessness. Do not lose hope!

When the time comes to replace the roof, many homeowners know very little about the materials used, or what to ask to get an estimate.

One way to improve their knowledge in this area is to become familiar with certain terms common roof, so that you and your contractor to understand each other.

These are some of the most basic terms for roofs that are good to become familiar with before repair or having a new roof put on your home –

Cover – The surface of the roof structure, usually plywood or some other type of advice to which roofing materials are applied. A good roofing work begins with a roof deck in good condition.

Flashing – Pieces of metal roofing materials or other means used to prevent seepage of water in the construction on the points where the roof meets a cross or projection, as the chimney, vent pipes, dormers, etc.

Granules – Crushed stone or ceramic-coated mineral granules applied to the surface of a tile. They protect a roof from the sun's ultraviolet rays and provide important qualities shed water.

Hip – The external angle formed by two sloping roof planes meet. The hips are the opposite of the valleys. special covers on roof shingles hip and ridge level give a finished look.

Valley – The internal angle or "valley" formed where two sloping roof planes meet. Valles serve as water drainage channels and require proper flashing to ensure proper drainage and prevent leakage along the valley of the joints.

Plaza – A measure of area exceeding 100 square feet (10 feet by 10 feet). roofing materials are usually measured in squares.

Subfloor or felt – A sheet of asphalt-saturated material (Often called tar paper for lay people) used for moisture and extra protection from the roof deck and the shingles.
