What you need to know about building your own storage shed

Over the years, Popular Mechanics has published several articles design and construction of backyard wells, many of which I am proud to have written. These items have always generated a lot of mail from readers looking for specific answers to your questions covered in capacity. It is not possible to answer every question, but here are the answers to five questions frequent.

1. I'm about to build an 8-foot by 6-storage shed for my yard and garden tools. Do I need a building permit for a building so small?

Great question. There is a misconception that building permits are required only for ships over 100 square feet (or some other arbitrary size). That is simply not true. You must apply for a building permit regardless of the size of the ship, and there are three good reasons why.

• First, the building inspector of the city will want to ensure that the ship is built to code not sink into the ground, suffering a catastrophic collapse of the roof or be toppled by strong wind. (Go ahead and laugh, but all three incidents are produced throughout the time.)
• Second, city officials must approve the proposed work to ensure that it is encroaching on wetlands, sitting on a septic or straddling a property line.
• Finally, if you build a shed on his property without first obtaining a building permit, the city ​​can either move the shed, or even consider completely.

One of the most important aspects of the construction of a covered – regardless of size of your backyard – is the selection of the best work. Here are some general rules to consider to place your shed:

3. What type of foundation would you recommend to support a 16-foot storage barn-10?

There are two basic types of bases covered: acting and permanent. The building inspector will ultimately decide what type of foundation you need to build, the decision is typically based on the size and height of the building. The following are the basic differences between the two types.

• Permanent foundations covered most often built by digging up the frost line and pour concrete footings, piers or slabs. Another option is a construction technique centuries-old known as the pole-barn construction: The holes are dug to the frost line, then high round poles or square posts down in holes and used the word support frame, the walls and ceiling.
• Contact the building inspector for the depth of frost-line in their region.

4. We had an old metal shed with a low angle roof finally collapsed after a snowfall of 12 inches. I'm going to remove the metal building and the construction of 12 by 16 feet of wood covered. What angle should build a gable roof to support snow adequately?

Never build huts with roofs of shallow pitch because they have very little free space inside, covered with snow and debris well – As I discovered – and frankly, I think they're ugly.

For any gable roof covered, I recommend a roof slope ranges from 10 to 12 (40 degrees) and 12 in 12 (45 degrees). Roof slope is calculated by the number of inches it rises vertically for every foot of horizontal run. For example, a 10-in-12 slope of the roof rises 10 inches by 12 inches each execution. That is strong enough to throw the snow, especially installing metal roofs. Of course, this is assuming that frame the roof to meet local building code.
