Percy the small engine
Illustration controversy
As the engine of Henry Green, Percy was the source of much friction between Rev. W. Awdry and C. Reginald Dalby, the illustrator of the Railway Series. Awdry complained that Percy did not look like a real locomotive, an issue that has caused controversy the two men on several occasions and on several characters. In the case of Percy, was particularly galling because Awdry had built a model of the motor so that the artist could use as reference.
All this came to a point in the book of Percy the small engine, focusing on the character of the same name, was written. Awdry Dalby sent a letter requesting that Percy should be made to look less like "a green caterpillar with red stripes." Insulted by this, Dalby resigned The Railway Series.
Illustrators later redesigned to look more like Percy a typical industrial locomotive. The television series, however, uses the original design.
The phrase "a green caterpillar with red stripes" resurfaces in 'Wooly Bear "the story later in which Thomas uses it as an insult to Percy and amendment were made between Awdry and Dalby.
The origins of Percy
In general outline, Percy is a typical British industrial shunting engine. His bunker is quite unusual for a 0-4-0 shunter, but presumably was added to allow travel great distances without refueling than was previously possible. Percy is not known where wine, but according to engine problem book, which was bought in a "workshop Engine "by the Comptroller of the fat. Percy was necessary to divert the courtyard of the main station, as the engines for competition (Gordon, Henry James) had have protested that parallel to its own trains.
The Rev. W. Awdry stories considered essential that rail should be as realistic as possible. With For this purpose, most of the characters of their locomotives were based on real designs. However, Percy was designed before the policy went into effect. History Percy in the fictional universe is well known, they are not exactly like any real locomotive design is "dark background" as the Rev. Awdry himself says. He does have a resemblance to various designs of 0-4-0 tank locomotive built by Avonside Engine Company as GWR No. 1340 Trojan and so Awdry said Percy had probably begun as one of them, but had been largely rebuilt "on the door installers have found components Crova Hunslet made by other manufacturers. Percy as a model
Percy is a 0-4-0ST of unknown origin, but is almost certainly secondhand. Percy came to Sodor in 1949 and was first used as Tidmouth pilot, then to help rebuild Knapford Harbour. Percy is now based on Ffarquhar.
Percy went to "Troublesome Engines" (1949), the only fool that the acquisition of a workshop is actually described. His own book "Percy the small engine" dates from 1956. C. Reginald Dalby quit Awdry as an illustrator after Percy describes his role in "Percy the small engine" as a "caterpillar." Amendment made in "Engines of tram" (1972), when an accident with molasses and straw Percy kindly made him look like a real caterpillar. In the history of the development, says that "the artist I did not pay much attention, so my Percy – the right – looks different from Percy in the books! "Revelation also describes his" Spare Percy 'to use in emergency situations:
"I built PERCY in 1949 (the year he wrote" Engines annoying "- The book in which Percy first appears), and welded brass and other parts cut and filed to shape. I wanted another engine – Thomas was then the only one who had – and I Percy wanted a model to help our artists and then draw their pictures, but the artist did not pay much attention, so my Percy – the appropriate – Percy is different than in books. Reidpath Stewart did for me and a chassis equipped with one of their motors, so Percy is sometimes as temperamental as Thomas, and for the same reason. They will run and pass very well for weeks and suddenly, for no apparent reason, decides to be 'clumsy'. This can be frustrating, especially in exhibitions. He did so in Nottingham Exhibition 1978, and the only thing to do then was to use my "spare Percy had done to such an emergency.
"To 'Spare Percy tanks cut off the boiler and the side of" Nellie "a Triange and fills the space resulting between the lid and smokebox with a saddletank cross section of an Airfix kit. Outside cylinders came from another Airfix kit, and consolidated 'Nellie' metal frames with Evostick. I fitted wheels scale instead of "Nellie" most awkward, and filled the body with clay. Good wheels and extra weight has made 'Spare Percy in a good performance engine almost as good as the real Percy in his best moments. "
Meanwhile, after 00 gauge Hornby Percy was a new world after Early Reflection Caledonian Railway use his "Pug" were rejected, although Percy finally came to share many of its parts.
Percy in the television series
In the series Thomas and Friends television, Percy made his debut in the first season in an episode called "The problem the ship, "which originally aired in 1984. His personality has remained the same until about season 8, when he became more curious about the world around, almost like Elmo from Sesame Street. In particular, he enjoys pulling the mail train.
Percy is the Japanese voice dubbing of 18 stations Chisato Nakajima, your new voice in Season 9 is provided by Chie Koujiro.
Percy Thomas and the Magic Railroad
Percy is first seen time in the movie Thomas and the Magic Railroad when Henry reveals the legend of the lost engine, which suggests that she start searching. Mr. Conductor is heard talking in a dream about the magic buffers, it is concluded that tampons are the Magic Railroad. He says to Thomas, but diesel is listened to by 10.
When the location of the dampers is indirectly Thomas, Percy is ordered to protect the caps, is splash and Dodge later near the stops and warns the driver and Mr. Thomas in time to help Lily stone back to his grandfather.
Percy was voiced by Linda Ballantyne in the film, Chisato Nakajima played him in the Japanese version.
