What’s the best way to build a shed roof?
Are you thinking of building your own shed roof? You may well have decided to take it on because you have been floored by the exorbitant prices of for kit sheds or to have one built for you. Probably the most daunting aspect of building your shed will be pitching the roof. First let’s look at different ways you could build a shed roof.
There are different styles of roof you can have.
The simplest would be a skillion or flat roof with a slight gradient for water run off. Basically it’s like making another wall frame and securing it to the top wall studs and then cladding it.
However, if you want something with a bit more style that could become a feature in your garden as well then a gable end roof will be much more attractive. This is your common pitched angled A shape roof with the triangular ends filled in. Apart from looking more attractive you have the potential to use the roof space inside the shed depending on the shed size. Maximizing storage space is always desirable.
If you get heavy snow in your area then this style of roof will facilitate the cleaning of snow off the roof.
With some easy to follow shed roof plans you could build it yourself in situe. A timber framed roof would be the easiest to work with. An easier way though is to use trusses built at ground level and then lifted into place and secured. You can have the trusses made up for you and delivered or with the appropriate shed roof plan and depending on the size of the job you could build your own.
You only need basic skills and with plans and a mate to help you lift them into place you will feel very proud of your achievement and save hundreds of dollars by doing it yourself.
So don’t be put off, you can build a shed roof. It’s much easier than you think. But you do need an accurate blueprint to guide you and make sure that the frame dimensions are adequate for your wall span and cladding weight.
