build shed dormer
What size timber ridge (s) should be used to clear span 26 'and support 2 shed dormers w / a / 4 point to 10?

This house was built in 1919. This is an existing story 3 with a gable roof with 1 existing attic gable. I would like to reframe the entire roof with to add 2 shed dormers. Will be approximately 20 'to be supported by a crest of 26' celing with a height of 9 '. The footprint of the house is 26 'X 25'. I would also avoid any center supports to break into the space. Is that too much to ask? I would like to avoid a laminated beam engineering … "I can double or even triple 2'X12 step in an assembly? Thank you.

Engineered wood is the only way forward. We started using many years ago them. The problem with dimensional lumber is the natural grain of the wood allowing the wood to split or crack along the grain under stress. Engineered wood is free this problem is not the point. I can not calculate the load to determine the beam size, where you use an engineer. I can tell you what I did about the same situation. Me like to use a 14 "LVL Beam Center, and then (2) 11-7/8" LVL, one on each side. Place the side of lvl 2 below the center of one – Set according to their inclination the ceiling beams that lets your run in the next lvl and put the center in a line. We beam in the front wall pocket each set crane truck. Then glue and drill and Lag Bolt lvl together. Has a structural engineer to load calculations. Good luck
