Trout fishing in Montana – A Perfect Day

Montana is blessed with water, gin-clear cold water. Federal Reserve of glaciers, snow in winter and deep mountain springs, Montana pristine icy waters are a perfect habitat for trout. Rainbow, Lake, Cutthroat, Brown and Brook trout thrive to the delight of the bears and fishermen.

Trout depend on cold water to survive. Our waters are cold, trout flourish in Montana. Brook Trout are the easiest to catch, but the most sensitive to water temperature, the population begins to decrease in waters exceeding 68 degrees F., other species of Montana of trout are comfortable in slightly warmer temperatures. Many anglers believe the carefully brown trout is the most difficult to catch.

Montana has literally thousands of miles of streams and rivers and a generous amount of the lakes. Here in Mineral County have 53 alpine lakes, however, only can lead to three, the rest are accessible only by hiking trails. Nearby Glacier County has 116 lakes. Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, north and east of Yellowstone Park has more than 400 lakes with trout. There is water everywhere blue ribbon, most filled with one or more species of trout.

The top of Triple Divide Peak, where they cross the continental divide is located in Glacier National Park (named for the glacial rivers of ice that made its majestic landscape). In general, fishing on the Clark Fork is excellent, the river is more than a thousand fish per mile in many areas. Some of the toughest and strongest anywhere trout are found in these waters. The Clark Fork River is considered one of the most prolific rivers in the western United States.

The Clark Fork River begins at its headwaters in the mountains near Silver Bow Anaconda, Montana and wanders the north and west by more than 275 miles through arid plains, mountains and valleys. When the Clark Fork crosses into Idaho, is the largest river in Montana, carrying an average of more than 22,000 cubic meters of water per second.

Rainbow Trout
(Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Trout Creek

Brook trout are abundant in mountain streams, gravel bottom. A good place to try your luck is in the eaves of the trees that provide protection from birds and take advantage of some shade. Brook trout feed other small fish, molluscs, crustaceans and insects. Almost any bait or lure that mimics its source of food from the earth will be a "Brookie."

A half-dozen "Brookie", sprinkle with flour and fry in butter over an open fire, are deliciously tasty. Add some chips, give back a couple of eggs and has a mountain morning breakfast "fit for a king."

Brown Trout
(Salmo trutta)

For many a fish, the elusive brown trout is hard to catch. The brown trout is much more cautious than other species. Shy habits to help ensure the longevity of trout in streams where others have been removed.

Brown Trout seek areas with plenty of coverage. Under log jams, cuts in the bank, dominating tree cover or rock outcrops are your favorite place to wait. As they grow larger, even more wary brown trout. They often feed at night when darkness offers protection. Although a challenge to catch, succulent flavor brown trout is a reward for patience.

Brown Trout typically feed of small fish, crustaceans, worms and insects. A Brown Trout Netting requires skill, tenacity and a little luck.

Lake trout
(Salvelinus namaycush)

By far the largest of all species of trout, lake trout prefer cold, deep lakes. Also sometimes called Salmon Trout, Makinaw or Great Lakes trout, they feed on any available source of meat and their habitat. Eels, salmon and a variety of small fish are It's all part of the diet of lake trout.

Due to their preference for cold waters, the flesh of lake trout is rich and flaky, very tender and tasty.

In early spring, fly fishermen working the lake shallows report success with dry flies. As the climate warms, the lake trout movement deep retreat to cooler waters. Summer and autumn trolling fishing requires a greater deal.

Cutthroat trout
(Salmo clarki)

cold mountain streams that eventually empty into the Pacific Ocean are the preferred habitat for trout. They feed on small fish, crustaceans parasites, and a variety of insects. In fast moving water or rapids, fly fishing is the method of choice. Brown Trout can also be taken with larvae worms or lures.

Most stocks are still slaughtered in fresh water for life. These trout populations are known as non-migratory residents and river flow. Some cutthroat make their home in the Pacific Ocean, returning to freshwater to feed and spawn in the fall, returning to the oceans in the first part of spring. Those who spend most of their time in the ocean can weigh up to 20 pounds. The trout that remain in fresh water may collect up to two pounds.

In 1977, the Cutthroat Blackspotted was named the state fish of Montana.
