The Bubble Car

We’ve seen the pedal bike evolve to something that you can fold away into your back pack, but never thought that the car would be able to do the same. Okay, perhaps not as foldable as the bike, but with imagery that makes you think of George Jetson’s foldaway briefcase car, we have the new EN-V concept Car.

The car has been designed by General Motors to shed the association with the petrol guzzling Hummer, and produce something light and safe for road users. The vehicle is designed to actively avoid car accidents, by communicating with other vehicles and therefore swerving them. Sounds farfetched?

‘What we’re talking about here is completely redoing the automobile,’ says Michael Albano, GM director of product and technology communications.

The idea for the vehicles is currently for the city only, with the car having no boot space at all for storage. The cars take up a fifth of the space that a normal vehicle does, meaning that it will be easier to park, and far more parking available. Its maximum speed is 24 mph, but in cities like London where the average speed on our streets is 12 mph (although in the commute to work it feels like 1), this is going to cause no detrimental value to our journeys.

The idea is, that by 2030, the technology would make it so that the car could drive completely for you, allowing you to finish your breakfast or get the notes ready for that all important meeting on the way. But these features would be option, as General Motors do not want to take the fun out of driving.

Whichever way you drive your vehicle, you will still need to obtain Car Insurance. Cheap policies can be bought online.

So, is the self driving bubble car the future of driving? We wait with baited breath.
