Surround Sound Blu Ray does not work?

We recently bought a brand new Sony blu ray, and Sony Home Theatre System (model HT-SS360) and is difficult to get the surround sound to work with the player. We collect television surround sound by adding the two component audio cables, but the blu ray player is connected to the TV via HDMI port and the first HTS is also connected to the TV in our second HDMI port. The player is not connected through the HTS (which I tried and I was a big nothing.) Do not have a digital optical cable. Does this make any difference? Can someone please shed some insight into what might be doing wrong?
